the History and Origin of our name
Just after the Roman period approximately 400 AD there is a mention about a Frankish tribe [some families] who went to the North,
to the current West Vlaanderen (nowadays Flanders Fields Belgium).
A tribe called Pupurn, they settled in the wooded area near the coast, but the land had to be cleared first.
This leveling work was called "Inga". The name Pupurn -into- Pupurninga either originated from here.
There is a Dutch name .. Van Popering, but also a French name .. VanPoperinghe. It is highly likely that both the Dutch branch as the southern French branch of the same origin. The French family branch is nowadays roughly 25km./15,5 mi. away from the current Poperinge/ Belgium. They live in the region Nord Pas de Calais in the town Quaëdypre
The Dutch branch (ours)is partly due to the struggle of faith (the 80-year Spanish war) along with many other families, they went from Antwerp to the Netherlands (Bergen op Zoom) Subsequently the Dutch fortified cities as Leiden, Amsterdam and Bergen op Zoom got many rich merchants and traders within their borders.
Our branch of the family started/came from Bergen op Zoom in 1585-1600, partly due to the fall of Antwerp,
all in favor of the Spanish troops
